28.12.08 Sydney to Hobart 2008

Wild Oats X1 wins 4th consecutive line honours in Sydney to Hobart after an epic battle of the Tasman Sea with arch rival maxi Skandia. Both yachts were locked in a match race to the end as they steamed down the south coast of NSW on boxing day evening and into Bass Straight on Saturday 27th. In the end it was the Bob Oatley owned 30m maxi who prevailed finishing with an elapsed time of 1 day 20 hours 34 minutes and 14 seconds.
Skandia had surprised with its boat speed to keep up with the highly fancied Wild Oats, and it was not until the winds died late on the Saturday evening that her valiant effort was thwarted with Wild Oats extending a comfortable winning margin.

27.12.06 Yachts run into trouble

The start to the Sydney to Hobart Race was a spectacular event on Sydney Harbour under blue skies. The bigger boats charged to the heads and a majority of the smaller boats raised their spinakers for the run down the harbour. However the conditions changed during the night and Maximus (pictured) and ABN Amro would lose their masts. Maximus had a number of crew airlifted to hospital after the mast came crashing down on the cockpit at about 3.30am in rough seas.

20.11.06 Aussie Golfers in Royal Sydney Shootout

The cream of Australian Golf were involved in a good old fashioned gun slinging shootout at Royal Sydney Golf Club last week with John Senden clinching victory in the Australian Open with two spectacular birdies on the final two holes to outshoot reigning US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy. Going down the stretch the leader board chopped and changed as the players battled it out to the finish. Half way throught the back nine it was still anyones guess as to who would become the champion for 2006 until John Senden rifled two magnificent iron shots to the par 3 17th, and then again to the par 4 18th in front of a packed crowd that had gathered around the final green. Holing a putt from around a metre on the final hole was enough the hold the trophy aloft with a score of -8 under. Geoff Ogilvy would run second by a shot and Stuart Appleby and Gavin Coles a further shot back in 3rd place.
